Dan Hanosh’s The Moon Also Rises
dreams to come and thoughts of tomorrow

Thoughts of a First Love

The snow fell I shoveled
the drive alone again – as
always to shoot in the cold night air
dampness chilled my soul

thoughts of greatness filled my
mind 3-2-1 the roundness left my
hand – snapped the frozen net
plopped into a pile ice cream sludge

her smile drew me in the darkness
her dialect a musical twang
made me shiver and you
walked with her

out of the blackness
wrapped tightly warm
through the ever silent whiteness –
I shot once more

never would I understand
why I walked by her house
so many times in the night
– youth’s fetid desire

and life keeps us fettered
long gray locks a wisp of what was
mystic eyed . . . all gone
as my memories of you

age questions
whether I was right maybe
. . . you were my first
and not her.
