Dan Hanosh’s The Moon Also Rises
dreams to come and thoughts of tomorrow

He Knew

Yesterday at Taco Bell
a man wandered through the door
thick bottle-glass eyes two winter coats
hair shoulder length greasy thin
he laid his pack on a chair
I watched him count his change
all eyes avoided my sojourner
alone he pulled himself to the counter

no one came to his aid
after a moment – no one came
another man walked to the counter
someone hurried to his side
hurried to take his order
I finished my food stood digging deep
a five sat crumpled too long
cold eyes followed me to his table

I flipped the token to the hard surface
thick wanton eyes caught my glance
I wanted to reach out and hug him
I wanted to tell him “You’re not alone”
he said “Thanks brother” and then
I knew – he knew.
