Tending the Garden

Working the ground, the feel
of warmth on my back, a
breeze cools my brow, each spade full
brings the image to reality,
a plot of ground into a garden.

One shovel then two,
each broken up by a hoe, blisters
form on my hands, earth worms awakened,
today, nothing sleeps, all must
leave to survive.

Rows are marked with string, seed packages
opened, one by one they enter the ground,
covered with dirt,
watered,
precisely,
not to crowd, not to over water, remove
the unwanted plants, weeds, up to no
good, watch and then and only then
will it grow.

Each day, the weeds are pulled,
plants watered, cultivated and
fertilized,
watching,
waiting,
anticipating,
with luck the plants produce
a tomato, a cucumber, a bean.

Clouds form, rain, maybe something
more sinister,
wind,
hail,
the garden destroyers, I pray for rain,
the bean leaves have been eaten,
pesticide, maybe, maybe not.
